Vintage VC identification

Hello all, just joined and I'm happy to be here.

I have just inherited this vintage VC from my father (which used to belong to my grandfather), so it has great sentimental value to me. I remember seeing this piece on my grandfather's wrist when I was a little kid. Thirty years have passed and now it's on my wrist. Nothing short of magical every time I look down at my wrist. I'm sure many of you can relate to the feeling.

I don't have much information on this piece except it was purchased in Hong Kong during the late seventies or early eighties. It does not have a quick-set, and had glossy black alligator bands.

A couple of questions:

Is there a model number associated with this watch? And what's the correct method of setting the time and date?

It tends to run fast by a couple of minutes after a few days and I'm nervous about moving the hands backwards. As there is no quick-set function, what's the best way of setting the date?

Much appreciated.

Beautiful watch you have! I don't know anything about this watch, sorry. But if it gains a couple of minutes in just one or two days, maybe it is time for a service? Best Blomman

It's not as fancy as some of the present day time pieces, however it is the simple elegance I appreciate. I will be bringing it down to the shop next week.

Non-quickset date change

The painful way to change the date on your calibre 1121 is to cycle the hands forward until you reach the desired date. The cheat is to rock the hands back and forth between 10 and 2, or thereabouts, which should also change the date (at least it worked f...

Thanks for the tip on the date change, it will definitely come in handy. I feel a lot safer now when I adjust the hands backwards for timing compensation. Are there any "don't"s for vintage pieces like this one?

Yeah, don't

let some mall watch & clock shop service this watch. The 1120 series is ultra-thin and ultra-fragile in the wrong hands. Sadly, there are some big name restoration shops I no longer trust so stick with VC or some trusted watchsmith with experience ser...

I agree, looks like a 44003 from the mid 1970s. I would take it to a local VC dealer to pop the back and give it a nice little tune up.

Great! Thank you for the confirmation. Do you happen to know how long the 44003 was in production for? -j
