Just added a Patrimony to my small collection

In all things, the supreme excellence is simplicity

Longfellow wrote this and I am always reminded of it when I see a beautifully simple, but amazingly executed watch. I received the latest addition to my budding collection today – a Patrimony Automatic. While it’s no secret that I have been coveting the Bi-Retrograde, I decided ultimately that a good collection needs a great foundation and went for a simple classic – something evocative of the foundations of the brand. This watch ticked all the boxes for me – simple, elegant, dressy, Geneva Seal, transparent back, white gold. It was a tough choice between this and the Traditionelle, but in the end the more modern aesthetic of this one won me over. Beyond just ticking the boxes, there are so many things I love about this watch – the dagger indices, the pearl minute track, the opaline silvered dial. I find it to be a beautiful expression of both modernity and classicism, somehow. Another great quote on simplicity comes from no less than Da Vinvci, who said “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” I think this is an apt explanation of this watch. It has a very sophisticated simplicity – something not easy to achieve.

So, once I have enjoyed this piece for a while, I will begin again looking at complications and flights of horological fancy, but for now, I heeded the words of Longfellow and opted for an expression of supreme excellence. Thanks Bill (WHL) for helping me acquire it.

Making a simple watch is not easy to do, since any aspect of the design or execution that is not well considered will stand out in a negative way. As great and interesting as the complications and Metiers d'Art pieces can be, I find that the essence of Va...

Thank you Bill

Thank you Bill. I couldn't agree more - nowhere to hide, execution, balance, proportion, every detail has to be perfect. This is one of those pieces for me. Thanks again for your help.

Congratulation! :)

Thank you, I feel the same way about it. From your recent post of the Saltarello, may I infer that you are a fan of the white metals as well?

I am a fan of white, pink, rose, .......

LOL! More serious, Sports, no questions - white! But I more and more tend to prefer Pink/Rose Gold for dress watches.... Not sure if it is the age that are getting me to change. Best Blomman

Perfection is best manifested simplicity

Well done and congrats on your new Patrimony! Great choice and you will love this watch for years and decades to come! :) It's so easy to add complications and dial designs to a high end watch... yet so difficult to get a simple dress watch perfected. VC ...

Vacheron Constantin does sophisticated simplicity so we'll, as you have observed. I can certainly understand your appreciation of the modern aesthetic of the Patrimony v. The Traditionnelle. How about a photo of the business side of your VC? I love seeing...

My pleasure to oblige

As I mentioned, a transparent back was a "hard requirement" for this acquisition, so I love seeing the movements as well. I need to get a good loupe now to really enjoy it. I aspire to have a collection as diverse as yours one day, Robert. For now, here i...

Thanks, jtodd

Yes, I love the architecture of that movement a lot. It is one of the calibers by VC that I would like to collect. Thanks for the kind words about my collection. As for a loupe, you might want to hunt for one of these: Congratulations once more on your be...

Vacheron seems to have zigged where the industry zagged

Yes, I really do like the movement too. Apart from the obvious fact that it is based on the "gold standard" 1120, I was interested to read how, while much of the industry was moving to the bridged, free-sprung balance, Vacheron decided to stay more tradit...

clock adds balance beautifully and this is a lovely automatic movement. Also the colour of the date disc does not 'stand out' in relation to the dial, which is the case with the same model with slate grey dial just recently introduced at WoW in Hong Kong....

Thank you , kpk

you have highlighted some of my favorite aspects of the watch - balance, understatement. Thank you for your kind words. I hope you have a great holiday season.
