I HAD TO get the extra LEAP SECOND for the PuristS

WHAT YOU SEE
GPS satellite master clock on top of the stack, drawing from 12 satellites in geosynchronous earth orbit.
Digital slave clock below (with its own internal backup counter if master goes awry)
Digital slave clock at bottom (centered, has no internal counter)

Counting towards the hour

Clocks hit the hour of 17:00:00 on 181st day of the year (30th of June)

Master clock sighs and takes a 1-second delay as requested by the wonks at the Naval Observatory. My display doesn't show a 60 as some clocks might.
First Slave clock, without instruction, continues to count on as normal.
Bottom (centered) salve display has no internal timer, so it sticks with the master (as it should)

Master clock finishes waiting and begins to count again, while delaying the slave for a second.

Slave clock gets back in line with the master, so all clocks together again.

The video is mesmerizing. Is there a single reference clock or timer that is considered the true time and all other timekeepers should use as a reference ? If this timer does exist where is it located? Love the post, love the video. Stewart

Hi Stewart, There is a MASTER clock in the Naval Observatory. Or rather there are clocks in 20 underground vaults around the US that compare times with each other, and the time gurus generate the ultimate signal for us. You might find the Time from A to Z...

I once heard a Nobel laureate give a lecture on precise atomic timekeeping.
