but that is a good thing !!

Sorry to go against the majority but  I disagree on both points (or I didn't fully grasp your points):

- Not for everyone as it should only be for people that appreciate it ? Fair point but, as you well know, these historic
brands need to grow to survive and the only selection process is how much money you have to spend.

- The closed case is not desirable anymore - again the market is king

"it's my belief something rather special has been lost in the process."

May be - but so are many watch brands that became extinct.  Don't get me wrong - nostalgia and vintage pieces are great - but you also need to move on and innovate. We can't live just in the past smile

the tear drop lug designs from VC's past. I hope that one day we'll see them again in a Historiques collection piece. Bill

...of a lovely, timeless timepiece. Your remark, "A Vacheron is not for everyone," is interesting. Do you care to say more? I think there might be several ways to interpret that statement. When I read that header and then saw your beautiful photo, I thoug...

Yes Respo, although the title on my post was intentionally ambiguous, it's clear you knew exactly what I was saying. A watch should be about style and a genuine respect for the watchmaker that gave it life and in my humble opinion, that style should be un...

And I am in agreement, there is something special about simply knowing that there is a beautiful, beautifully finished movement, a 454/5B In your case, ticking away inside the watch without the window on the back to view inside. There is that mutual respe...

May I add that this brand....

is a very exclusive one with traditions and long standing history of innovations. That being said. I belive that the case of open or closed back is only a tip of an iceberg of possible topics to discuss. In my oppinion this exclusive brand is one of most ...

Interesting thoughts

Some good points, particularly the solid vs. open case back. I never thought of the "secret" inside but it makes sense, but I will admit to liking an open back to admire the workmanship.

I agree with you.

There are some movements, not only VC, which are exquisite and should regularly be seen and admired as much as the dial and case. And then there is something like the Malte Perpetual Chrono with a half-hunter back. I would hate to miss the beautiful engra...

so sorry in advance if I "go long". First, I agree with Robert's and Joseph's comments and what appears to buyout sentiment. I think this may touch on some reasons why we look at certain watches as very overpriced, "bling", fashion-watches, etc. I often s...

One more quick addition to my ramble

 By: jtodd : January 26th, 2015-11:11
This came to me later and I think it is worth adding. I think it even holds true to the classics v. pop art metaphor. For me, and those I would call horological classicists, the primary value of a timepiece is INSIDE the case. I think that for many of tho...
