...but I checked the case and movement numbers with VC and the numbers do not match their records.  So for me, case closed.

The listing is for a purportedly ref. 4838  is still up on Fleabay (interesting, too, because I could have sworn that it was marked sold a while back...). The watch comes with an appraisal from a third party, but that really does not mean much other than providing the case and movement numbers.  the case has been overly polished, so that would be another concern, but again the numbers issue makes it dead in the water as you can never fix that.

OK, the silly price tag on this item will likely prevent a sale, but still... If genuine, this would be the one and only T-Bird without date, but there are also problems with the movement rotor and case back engraving. Smaller point; the seconds counterpo...

Thanks for doing the analysis on this one, Dean

I had looked at this listing myself and came to the same conclusion -- maybe I am getting better at this game. :-D I also did my due diligence on a Chronometre Royal recently -- and boy, am I glad I did! It is dangerous out there. Best, respo

Maybe you can share the CR

be educated. I feel badly for those that don't know the resource that long-standing forums provide to assist with researching the vintage market. V&C seems overly susceptible to fakers and fraudsters, in no small part to a lack of published material.

I don't think its a great idea to buy a watch

on the web, but I would NEVER buy a vintage watch online. If I would consider an online purchase it is much harder to sell a counterfeit new model IMO, unless someone posts pictures of the real deal and then sends something completely different. It is jus...

I appreciate your sentiments but not everyone, myself included, has access to other sources than the internet for vintage collecting. I've never intended these Alerts to scare people away from internet-based deals, only to warn of the fakes and frankens. ...

I have bought a number of watches on the internet

They have all been advertised as new models that have never been worn being sold by unauthorized dealers, i.e. grey market. Before I formed a relationship with our VC moderator I had no other avenue to purchase watches without traveling to bigger cities. ...
