salmons

made me laugh to read of a dealer looking to talk you into selling yours on the cheap... can see it taking place in front of me in my mind.
Some very valid and interesting points you raise and in a blurb below I will try to summarize my take.... hope not too incoherently....
In short here are my thoughts. I think the majority will favor the 5970 salmon over the 5270 salmon. Aesthetically 5970 is more symmetrical and compact. Traits that appeal to me particularly. Now the fact that the salmon 5970 is pretty much unobtainable within any reasonable means is also adding to the allure I suppose. But even disregarding that fact I would favor the 5970 salmon.
Now that we have that out of the way a few thoughts on the salmon 5270. I do think it is a great move to do end the 5270 series with a platinum salmon dial. Now, I have not yet seen this in the real, but what I see on photos I do think looks great. I too wish the hour numerals had been applied white gold instead of black, and hands better in white metal and perhaps the chronograph seconds hand in white. However the black looks like it works on the few photos I have seen. Salmon dials are incredibly difficult to capture on photos so the tone and texture of the dial is something I look forward to seeing in the real one day. I do hope it is not as flat in texture as some photos make it look, but I know many times dials in these colors look dramatically different and flatter on photos. Especially when taken in poor lighting conditions. The 5270 series is another reference that could have been far more successful to Patek had it not been overproduced. I am somewhat disappointed that Patek has not tried to keep supply tighter on its flagship model, the perpetual calendar chronograph is such an important reference to Patek lineup that the current variation of it should be harder to acquire and thereby become more desirable. Even if it has what some consider design flaws, that is a subjective matter. On the objective side it is a phenomenal movement inside and overall a very beautiful reference. I do hope the P will be different in this respect. I hope they keep production figures low enough in order to make this piece special in a way it deserves to be. Not only to the people who purchase a 5270p but also to the collectors and enthusiasts who own salmon dial special pieces made by Patek in the past.
On your points regarding the direction of Patek, I agree with you on some points. It is however a rapidly changing world and I do believe Patek is trying to adapt to this new world. On one side the changing tastes and requirements from new generation buyers as well as new cultures buying. It is a growing world and no longer are they catering mainly to a small segment of wealthy people with similar tastes. A challenge on many levels to please demands from different cultures while maintaining its identity. Then add to this the challenge to keep watches interesting in this new age where time telling is no longer requiring a mechanical wrist piece. In this I have many concerns both when it comes to Patek and the overall watch industry. But hope my worries will prove unnecessary. In the meantime I will continue to enjoy what I enjoy and try to not get too caught up in the hysteria around what is next.
Just my 5c...
